Isabella Santoro lay quietly in her bed. She was alone and had stopped her incessant moaning. Yes, she’d been badly beaten by her cellmate, but the injuries were only superficial. She was in pain, yes, but her adrenaline level would help her escape.

The bandage around her forehead was wet with blood and her arms were covered in darkening bruises. Outside her room, two elderly policemen were standing guard and talking to one of the orderlies.

“Did you see the game yesterday?” one of the cops asked looking around the sterile hospital environment.

“No, I missed it,” the orderly replied, bored. “Any good?”

“Well, the first half was lame, but then it got pretty wild.”

The nurse grimaced. “Too much information already, sorry,” he said a little mockingly. “You guys want coffee?”

The cops nodded. “Sure. We still got two hours before we’re relieved.”

“I’ll bring it in a minute. I’ll just check on the patient.”

The nurse opened the door and Isabella immediately slipped back into her role. She had quickly closed her eyes and now opened them again, as if the orderly had woken her up. She groaned.

“Anything you need, Miss Santoro?” he asked.

Isabella shook her head wearily. But she thought, Yes, for Cloutard to finally show up.
